  • Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey (CPS ASEC)—The CPS ASEC produces national- and state-level estimates of health insurance coverage. Data on coverage extend back to 1987. CPS ASEC respondents are asked whether they had any coverage during the previous calendar year based on interviews conducted in February-April of the following year. • American Community Survey (ACS)—The ACS added questions on health insurance coverage in 2008, and the September 2009 release of estimates includes geographic areas of 65,000 or more as well as national- and state-level estimates. ACS respondents are asked whether they are currently covered at the time of interview, based on interviews conducted throughout the year. For more information on the ACS and health insurance estimates from this survey, see (health insurance coverage working paper: 2008 ACS). • Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP)—The SIPP is a longitudinal survey that started in 1984. It is a unique dataset that provides national-level data on spells without health insurance coverage and the characteristics of those who become insured/uninsured from one year to the next. For more information on SIPP, go to http://www.census.gov/sipp/ and for SIPP health insurance publications, go to http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/hlthins/sipp.html.

  • Small Area Health Insurance Estimates (SAHIE)—The SAHIE program produces annual model-based estimates of health insurance coverage for states and each of the nation’s counties. In August 2009, SAHIE released 2006 estimates by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, and income categories at the state level and age, sex, and income categories at the county level. For more information and the latest estimates, go to http://www.census.gov/did/www/sahie/index.html.
