Tips to Prevent Identity Fraud There are some simple ways to reduce your chances of becoming a fraud victim:

How you can protect yourself from Identity Theft

• To reduce mail theft install a mailbox that is secure and has a lock
• If you don't use some of your credit cards cancel them
• Check your credit and checking statements and reconcile them
• Check your utility bills for accuracy make sure there are no charges that you are not aware of.
• Make a list of all your credit cards and accounts with contact address and phone number so in case of theft or loss you can immediately contact and inform the companies.
• Always destroy or tear sensitive offers and information before throwing them in the trash.
• Don't fall for credit repair scams. Only inaccurate information may be removed or corrected on your credit report; negative information that is accurate will stay on your credit report as long as governed by law.
• Limit what information thieves can get from your purse or wallet
• Do not carry your extra credit cards, Social Security card, birth certificate, or passport in with you unless you need them for a purpose.
• Memorize your passwords and try not to write them down.
• Do not share your pin or enter it in presence of others.
• Shred your credit card and ATM receipts.
• Never leave your wallet unattended even in your locked car.
• Don't give Social Security information to anyone by telephone, even if you made the call, unless you can positively verify that the call is legitimate.
• Minimize exposure of your Social Security and credit card numbers.
• Destroy all checks immediately after you close a checking account.
• Never print your Social Security Number on your personal checks.
